Comic-Con Restaurant Guide - Outside of Downtown
If Comic-Con’s hotel-apocalypse did not serve you well then you might be outside of Downtown San Diego. With shuttles and the trolley, it’s not a huge problem to get in and out of the convention area, but in the evening, you might want to head outside of Downtown San Diego for a nice meal after Comic-Con.
There are a lot of great Restaurants outside of Downtown San Diego. Let’s look at a few that I recommend.
Old Town
Old town is the original site for San Diego. There are some fantastic things to see here including the most haunted house in America, the Whaley house. These are my favorite spots to grab a bite.
Fiesta de Reyes
This is a delicious option for traditional Mexican food. I bring tons of guests to Fiesta de Reyes throughout the year. Tables surrounding an open courtyard where music and a festive atmosphere take place. I love ordering the appetizer sampler, it has a little bit of everything and it’s a great way to start the meal. I also highly recommend the churros here, they are amazing! Don’t forget to order yourself a giant margarita, you’ll find they are large and extremely delicious.
Trattoria Don Pietro’s
If you are looking for something besides Mexican food, I recommend Don Pietro’s. They offer delicious Italian cuisine and some unique drinks! I highly recommend the Pop Star Shot. It comes with a buzz button flower and everyone I bring here absolutely is amazed by this cocktail. I also recommend the Hollywood pizza and the White Sauce spaghetti. They are my must orders on the menu! The restaurant is large with both indoor and outdoor seating.
El Sueño
I love the vibes at El Sueño, with its jungle decor and golden accents. It’s definitely a place you want to sit and stay for a while. Being just outside of the Old Town park so the space is not as overcrowded. They are serving up some delicious fresh Mexican dishes. I recommend the Papas Dorado here and the Duck Carnitas. This is also the place you want to go if you are looking for some creative and tasty cocktails. My personal favorite is the Smoke & Mirrors cocktail.
Pacific Beach
If you want to head to the coast, you might want to check out Pacific Beach. This area has some great food options and is well known for its local speakeasies.
The Grass Skirt
The Grass Skirt is a full-service speakeasy. They have tons of great food and a huge variety of Tiki drinks! To enter the space, you walk through a poke kitchen and into a tropical paradise! I recommend trying the big Mac bao, which is a boa paying homage to the McDonald’s Big Mac! I enjoy the Swinging Saturn and the Painkiller tiki cocktails.
The Captain’s Quarters
The Captain’s Quarters is another speakeasy located in the same complex as the Grass Skirt. This location features some very delicious gin drinks as well as a full menu. They have smaller more gourmet bites to go along with the drinks here. I recommend getting anything with caviar here it is exceptional! I am a fan of the Gimlet here and their French 72 (a slight twist on the French 75).
North Park
North Park has steadily become the place to be in San Diego. This vibrant and bustling community in full of fun activities and delicious food! Below is a notable few.
Wormwood
If you are looking for a nice evening away from all the hustle and bustle of Comic-Con and a delicious meal, I recommend Wormwood. This French restaurant featuring unique absinthe cocktails is something you would want to see while you’re in San Diego. With indoor intimate, French brasserie dining and outdoor garden Jardin it is a place to celebrate or mark an occasion while visiting San Diego. Right now, you can experience their Happy Hour specials from 5 pm -7 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
The Fortunate Son and Polite Provisions
I like to pair these two although they’re no longer connected. There are two locations you will want to visit together. Fortunate Son offers upscale Chinese food. Their dishes are fresh and filling. It’s a perfect place to share dishes and you can never go wrong with mixing and matching here. The interior is gorgeous, and it is photo worthy! I recommend hitting up Polite Provision before or after Fortunate Son, they have some of the most elaborate cocktails, and the menu is an adult coloring book which is a lot of fun to see. The space is also done quite well, and you will enjoy hanging out here before or after dinner. If you can’t get a table at Fortunate Son, you can also order from their to-go window and bring it to Polite Provisions!
The Lafayette Hotel
The Lafayette is a destination just itself. With multiple restaurants and bar areas you could spend an entire day here! You do not need to be a guest of the hotel to experience the restaurants and bars, but you will need a day pass for the pool if you want to be on the pool deck. I highly recommend the retro inspired space, Beginner’s Diner, which offers some delicious breakfast items and fancy morning cocktails! My favorite place to hang out is in the lobby bar. It’s a beautiful bright open space and they have some incredible cocktails. You could also spend the evening at Lou Lou‘s bar, which is a supper club and music hall located below the main lobby. Visit their website for all the entertainment details and to learn how to book a day pass at the pool.
