How to Buy San Diego Comic-Con Badges: A First-Time Attendee’s Guide

Dreaming of attending San Diego Comic-Con for the first time? Here’s what you need to know about getting a badge, creating your Comic-Con Member ID, navigating the virtual waiting room, and your best options if you don’t get one during Open Registration.
If you've never attended San Diego Comic-Con, figuring out how to actually get a badge can be almost as confusing as navigating the convention itself.
Unlike many conventions, Comic-Con does not simply put four-day tickets on sale and let you purchase one whenever you are ready. Badges are limited, demand is extremely high, and first-time attendees must participate in Open Registration.
The good news? With a little preparation, you can make sure you're ready when the badge sale opens.

First: Comic-Con Uses Badges, Not Tickets
One of the first things you'll notice when researching San Diego Comic-Con is that the convention refers to admission as a badge rather than a ticket.
Your Comic-Con badge is your admission credential and must be worn while attending the convention.
Comic-Con also strongly warns attendees not to purchase badges from third parties. Badges are tied to individual attendees and are non-transferable.
So if you see someone online offering to sell you a "Comic-Con ticket," be extremely cautious.
Your badge should come directly through the official Comic-Con registration process.
Step 1: Create Your Comic-Con Member ID
Before you can participate in Open Registration, you need a valid and confirmed Comic-Con Member ID.
Think of your Member ID as your Comic-Con registration account. It is not your badge. Instead, it is the account you use to participate in the badge sale and manage your Comic-Con registration.
The Member ID is free.
If you're planning to attend with family or friends, there's another important detail: everyone who needs a paid badge must have their own Member ID.
For example, if you're hoping to purchase badges for yourself, your spouse and two friends, each of those people needs their own valid Member ID.
Do this before badge sale day
Don't wait until the morning of Open Registration to create your account.
Set up your Member ID well in advance and make sure:
Your email address is correct
You can successfully log into your account
Your personal information is accurate
Everyone in your group has their own Member ID
You have opted in to receive Comic-Con registration emails
Comic-Con recommends having a valid Member ID before participating in badge sales and uses email communication to provide important registration information.
Step 2: Watch for the Open Registration Announcement
For Comic-Con 2027, Open Registration is scheduled for:
Saturday, November 14, 2026
Open Registration is the badge sale intended for the general public, including first-time attendees.
You must have a valid and confirmed Comic-Con Member ID to participate.
Comic-Con's official registration information should always be your source for the final sale time and instructions, since the virtual waiting room and registration details can change.
Step 3: Get Ready for the Virtual Waiting Room
This is where Comic-Con badge buying gets stressful.
Open Registration uses a virtual waiting room. Entering the waiting room does not mean you've secured a badge.
When the sale begins, attendees are randomly selected for registration sessions. If you're selected, you'll have an opportunity to purchase available badges.
And this is one of the most important things for first-time attendees to understand:
Getting into the waiting room does not guarantee that you will get a Comic-Con badge.
Comic-Con has more people interested in attending than there are badges available. So don't panic if you don't immediately see a purchase screen.
Step 4: Know Which Days You Want to Attend
Before badge sale day, think about your ideal Comic-Con schedule - but be flexible. I never met a Comic-Con day I didn't like!
For 2027, the convention is scheduled for July 22–25, 2027, at the San Diego Convention Center.
You can purchase individual daily badges or all four days.
If you purchase Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, those four daily badges are automatically converted into a 4-Day badge.
Preview Night is different. It is not available as a stand-alone purchase. To purchase Preview Night, you must also purchase Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
2027 Comic-Con badge prices
The currently announced 2027 prices are:
Wednesday Preview Night: $67 adult
Thursday: $88 adult
Friday: $88 adult
Saturday: $88 adult
Sunday: $67 adult
Reduced pricing is available for juniors ages 13–17, active-duty U.S. military and seniors age 60 and older. There is also a $15 handling fee per member. Children age 12 and under can attend free with a paying adult, subject to Comic-Con's child badge policy.
Step 5: Can You Buy Badges for Your Friends?
Yes—but there are rules.
If you're selected for a registration session, Comic-Con allows you to purchase badges for up to three other people, with or without purchasing one for yourself.
However, the people you're purchasing for must have their own valid Comic-Con Member IDs and must be eligible for the registration event.
You'll need their Member ID and last name exactly as it appears on their account.
My advice?
If you're buying for a group, get everyone's information together before the sale.
Have a list containing:
Member ID
First and Last name exactly as listed on their account
Desired badge days
Their eligibility status
You don't want to be hunting through text messages while you're in a limited registration session.
What If You Don't Get a Badge?
This is probably the question I hear most from people who want to attend Comic-Con for the first time.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you'll get a badge through Open Registration. Comic-Con explicitly states that participating in a badge sale does not guarantee a purchase because demand exceeds available inventory.
But don't give up immediately.
There are other ways to experience Comic-Con and San Diego during Comic-Con week. One option that first-time attendees should know about is the Comic-Con Museum.
How to Buy San Diego Comic-Con Badges without the waiting room: Comic-Con Museum Membership
If you're serious about attending San Diego Comic-Con and don't want to rely entirely on the traditional badge sale, the Comic-Con Museum offers limited memberships that include Comic-Con admission.
The museum's Hero Membership is particularly worth knowing about for Comic-Con fans because it offers a way to secure a Comic-Con badge through the membership program.
This can be an attractive option for someone who is trying to attend Comic-Con for the first time and doesn't want to leave their plans entirely up to the Open Registration lottery.
Membership availability and included benefits can change, so check the Comic-Con Museum's current membership information before purchasing.
For first-time attendees, I would definitely put this option on your radar.
Don't Forget About Comic-Con's Offsite Events
One of my favorite things about San Diego Comic-Con is that Comic-Con isn't limited to the convention center.
Even if you don't have a badge, there are typically numerous events, activations, parties, pop-ups and experiences taking place throughout downtown San Diego during Comic-Con week.
Some are completely free, while others require reservations or tickets.

So if you don't get a badge, don't automatically cancel your trip.
San Diego becomes Comic-Con central during the week of the convention.
My Biggest Tip for First-Time Attendees
If Comic-Con is on your bucket list, start preparing months before badge sale day:
Create your Member ID.
Make sure your friends and family do the same.
Watch your email.
Follow Comic-Con's official channels.
Know which days you want.
Have your payment information ready.
And most importantly, understand that the badge sale is competitive - Don't assume that because you're online at the exact moment badges go on sale, you'll automatically get one.
